Subject: Yellowstone over memorial day weekend '07 Posted on: Mon, 23 Apr 2007 04:12:08 +0000 (UTC)

Hello,

After a day and a half of almost non-stop research (anything on
yellowstone is fascinating - even the preliminary research), and some
bookings, my brother and I have decided to go to yellowstone national
park over the memorial day weekend. We plan on driving from Salt Lake
City (where i live) on 26th morning to West yellowstone and leaving
from there late on the evening of the 28th (my brother has to be at
SLC airport the following noon to leave for LA).
Would greatly appreciate if someone could give us tips about the
following:

1. Route info - I believe I-15 from salt lake to west yellowstone
should be faster than US 89 - but is 89 worth the extra hours? (based
on reading some of the previous posts, I reckon 4 hours extra via 89 -
through jackson and GTNP - if we stop to take pictures enroute)

2. Is Lamar valley the best place to spot wildlife in late may (we're
most interested in seeing wolves and /or bear) ? Since we're staying
in west yellowstone - i reckon the drive to and fro the valley would
make for a loooong day. Or is there a bit of a chance of spotting
something closer to the west gate?

3. Since we have only two full days in the park, and it's memorial
day, we've already given up the idea of doing the two loops. But
within two days, what points are 'must-see'.

4. Birdwatching - since spotting big animals is always a matter of
chance (and hard work), birdwatching might just save our trip. Any
specific areas?

thanks for reading this far - and for any replies that may come.
