Yes, food is more expensive but not that much more. Unless you have
particular health issues, it's not worth packing food. And the local fruit
is wonderful and cheap. We always hit the farmers' markets, buy pineapple,
papayas, guavas, kiwi, little local bananas, etc. and have big fruit salad
meals.
The Big Island is indeed big and you won't want to drive from one side to
the other for groceries. Anything frozen will thaw by the time you get back.
There are supermarkets in Hilo, Waimea, and Kona. And there's a Walmart in
Kona.
So where on the island will you be staying?
