I had a problem in Montreal. After not having a single
problem using my debit Visa (linked to my savings account)
in twenty other countries an ATM outside a bank in downtown
Montreal would not accept it. I carry double back-up: a
MasterCard and a Visa credit card. The credit Visa worked,
so I was OK, but it would have been scary if it hadn't.
Which is why, of course, I carried back-up.

On a previous trip the cc Visa maxed out while we were in
France because a bank employee back home had failed to
transfer funds when the monthly payment came due. Rather
embarrassing at the supermarket checkout when the girl
started shouting in a foreign language (she seemed to assume
that louder meant understanding was more likely); but
quickly fixed when the MC worked.

Traveller's cheques have gone the way of photographic film
for wanderers like me. Something I used to use but no longer
practical.
