This is actually not bad compared to some other places. There was a
USA Today article on highest rental car taxes at airports and I think
Houston was the "winner" with 73% tax. Several others were between
30-40%, including the city I live in, where rental car taxes help pay
for our shiny new football stadium.

Usually you can avoid this one by picking up the car off site ... as
an example I think in Anchorage there's a 15% state tax, 10% city tax
and 8% airport tax (these may not be exact but pretty close) and you
can avoid the 8% tax by picking up the car by picking it up at a site
nearby but not *at* the airport ...
