Midtown is more convenient than downtown for most travelers.

Little Italy, the South Street Seaport, and Rockefeller Center are
complete tourist traps and should be avoided. Also avoid restaurants
in those areas, in the Times Square area, and in the Theater District.

Some older guidebooks mention La Marqueta in Spanish Harlem. Don't go
there - there's almost nothing left of it.

The Staten Island Ferry has great views, but make sure you get on the
return ferry immediately. There's nothing of interest on Staten
Island.
