What with NYC's excellent subway and bus system almost any
location in Manhattan is good. The things to see are scattered
about so no location will be that much better than another.
Don't spend all your time in Midtown Manhattan. Visit the
West and East Villages, Soho, Chinatown, one or more of the
great museums, Central Park. The city is far more than a
few "attractions". Take the Staten Island Ferry past the
Statue of Liberty.
You will find a wealth of good restaurants in the East and
West Villages -- avoid restaurants in Midtown which cater
largely to tourists and are overpriced.
Buy a subway pass also good on buses and you can travel
about quickly at little cost. The buses are slow but allow
you to sightsee because of that and hop on or off.
These are general guidelines and it is hard to recommend
specific things without knowing your interests.
The city is endlessly fascinating, you won't see it all --
after 25 years I was still making new discoveries. Buy
a good guidebook and choose from that the things that look
appealing.
