Car rental is the only way to go. It will allow you to enter some
of the parks the "back way". For instance, there is a highway,
CA-120, into Yosemite from the east side; a bus or any form of
public transit would require you to make a rather long journey
around the Sierra Nevada mountains to the west side of the park.
Using the eastern pass will also take you near some other
interesting things like Mono Lake and the nearby volcanic cinder
fields.

Also. Public transit will not take the most direct route from
park to park.
