I disagree - You can stay at somewhere like the Tantalus lodge right in the
village for around $140 USD per night, and a quick check on Expedia shows
you can get a room at the Delta Whistler Village Suites for around $100 USD.
From there you can take the lifts up the mountain and hike all over the
place, without needing your car. The village is small enough that you can
walk everywhere. It certainly is touristy, but not like Disneyland. To
wit:

Contrast this with Pemberton, where you're driving 45 minutes each way on a
windy road, and once you arrive at Whistler you may have to pay for parking.
