When I went to Death Valley we approached from the west, e.g. opposite
your direction. There was a long stretch of downhill coming in from
the west. That means when you exit to the west you'd have a long
stretch of uphill. But I don't remember that being a particularly
difficult drive. If you are going to leave early in the morning it
should not be a big problem.
