In most cases, lack of salt just results in nausea or muscle cramps.
This is fairly common in marathon races, for example. And in your
case you had no adverse symptoms.

Go to the "Safety" page of the official Death Valley site, and you'll
see no mention of salty snacks. They just say to drink plenty of
water.

However it's certainly good advice to get enough salt, especially in
extreme situations like desert hiking, either through salty snacks or
through salty sports drinks.
