However the Army has had incidents with fluid intake at low as 5 quarts
(which is still quite a lot of water if you sit down to drink it). As a
result of a number of incidents they researched and revised their
procedures a few years back.
The current Army guidelines can be found at
http://www.armystudyguide.com/content/army_board_study_guide_topics/field_sanitation/fluid-replacement-guidelines.shtml.
Note that those are for adults, probably should adjust for body weight
when applying to kids, and note that even the "light exercise" is still
a lot more than you get sitting in a car.
If you're just driving through in an air conditioned car, carry plenty,
drink when you're thirsty, don't worry about it. If you're going to be
hiking around then pay attention to the temperature and follow the
guidelines.
The _important_ thing is to have enough to keep everybody going for a
day or so in case the car breaks down and you're stuck there for a
while.
