The Valley bottom is flat, but that's not where the road drives.
The road goes up and down fans. The passes except to the S go over 5K
ft. passes with 6% and >6% grades in some places for distances sustained
over 10+ miles and two lanes only. Save brakes.
I had to teach my Italian post doc (just learning how to drive)
how and why to down shift to lower gears.
I did this with a work van (govt.).
Year ago I remember that Jerry Pournelle, trying to rush to attend a
conference in I think Santa Rosa, rolled his Bronco on the S side of the
Valley. DV in August? Well it's not the Peak US tourist season.
You will see a lot of Germans and Italians there.
