IMHO, Cabot Trail and Lighthouse Trail are definitely the highlights in NS.
In NL, if you do nothing else, visit Gros Morne Park on the west coast
(Wildflowers in Rocky Harbour is a great place to stay, and Java Jack's also
in Rocky Harbour serves fantastic food). We enjoyed the drive up the Great
Northern Peninsula to L'Anse aux Meadows the site of the Viking settlement,
and St. Anthony, home of the Grenfel Mission --- while in that area, a short
detour over to the southeastern corner of the Labrador is also interesting.
Twillingate (north shore) is nice, and the Bonavista Peninsula (including
Trinity) is good to see. If you saw the movie The Shipping News, or the CBC
series Random Passage, they were both shot in nearby Bonaventure. St.
John's is a fascinating city (try Monroe House as a place to stay, the
Casbah a great place to eat). If you're into birds, visit St. Mary's at the
southern tip of the Avalon, and there's good whale watching at Witless Bay,
on the east coast of the Avalon. Just south of St. John's is Cape Spear,
the eastern-most point in North America.
