At this time of year you'll have nice 'long' days but keep in mind that
driving westbound the last few hours, i.e., when you're getting tired,
you'll be heading straight into the sun, which could be annoying as well
as potentially dangerous. It might be a better idea to start earlier and
stop when the sun starts to angle directly into your eyes.
If you stick to the Eisenhower motorways you can easily cover the
distance in four days (but without much time for stopping), or in six
days with a few carefully chosen and well-disciplined breaks.
Long-distance driving in America can be a marvellous experience. I
wouldn't want to do it all the time -- there are so many idiots on the
road! -- but I once drove from Denver to Milwaukee stopping only for
petrol and bio-breaks; it was great fun.
