With only 4-6 days you wont have much time for sightseeing

At this time of year that means 14 hours driving a day !

This is NOT a good idea in my humble opinion , better to aim
for 8-10 hours.

There are other chains to pick, Super8 and Red Roof are usually good
value and reasonable quality in my experience

I've driven Route 66 and would recommend Tom Snyders book titled
Route 66: Traveller's Guide and Roadside Companion.
It has strip maps for the entire route and a lot of info

Must See stops are

The Gateway Arch St Louis

Meramec Caverns in Missouri
http://www.americascave.com/

The Cadillac Ranch in the Texas Panhandle

Tucumcari New Mexico - stay in the wonderful Blue Swallow Motel

The Meteor Crater in Holbrook Arizona , also drive by
the WigWam Motel

Petrified Forest NP in Arizona

The Grand Canyon

The section of Route 66 between Williams AZ and
Barstow California is not to be missed
