Some thoughts:
TO-LA in 4 to 6 days is not what I would call a sightseeing trip. I
would call it a "get there as soon as I can" trip. To make it in as
few as four days, I don't think you will be able to have a "few" one
hour excursions each day. Either plan on allowing for a few more days
of travel, or don't count on many side trips.
TO-Chicago is doable in one day; about 500 miles. If you do this on a
weekday, though, you stand a good chance of arriving at Chicago during
the evening rush hour(s). The highway traffic in and around Chicago
during the rush is legendarily heavy and slow. The nearer you get to
Chicago the more you'll be delayed. Do your best to avoid this.
