Motel 6. The original low-priced motel chain. Most properties were
renovated in the late '90s with upgraded security. Not fancy, but safe
and clean.

How far you drive each day depends on you. You might want to read
though http://www.ironbutt.com/tech/aowprintout.cfm. While it's aimed
at people riding thousand mile days on motorcycles, much of the advice
applies equally to driving a car for shorter distances.

One suggestion. If you want to make good time then plan on hitting
Chicago and other cities after 2 AM (that's 2 in the _morning_). Most
cities are _dead_ after 2, even New York. I'd load the car up, go to
bed around 6 PM (take a pill if you need to to get to sleep), wake up
around 2, stop about 50 miles short of Chicago, have some lunch, do
whatever until 6 or so, crash, wake up at 2, go though Chicago, and
repeat. That also has the advantage that you're not driving during the
day so you can do a little bit of sightseeing between the end of the
day's drive and bedtime.

Do it that way and you'll miss a lot of scenery, but you'll also miss a
lot of traffic, about the only thing you'll see on the road is long-haul
truckers.

If you're planning on driving at night by the way, do get a set of spare
headlight bulbs and learn how to change them. It's a rare occurance,
but I once had all four lights go out in a single night, and after 9 PM
it's hard to find a replacement.
