I don't know about the more variety part. Prices do vary not just in
different states, but different cities in the same state. This is
mainly due to cost of doing business (rent, business taxes, wages,
etc.). In general if you are shopping and can do it anywhere, you may
want to pick a state that has no sales tax, for example Oregon. There
are people who live in Washington (no income tax) and shop in Oregon
(no sales tax). Washington is not too happy about it and do have tax
collectors trolling shopping malls and grocery stores in Portland to
check on cars with Washington license plates.
