For LA-Chicago, going via Cheyenne is absurd.
But I suspect the fastest route is to parallel old US-66,
LA-Flagstaff-Amarillo-Oklahoma City-St Louis-Chicago.
My atlas shows LA-Chi as 2041 miles. For a 15 hour drive that's
136mph. Not likely.
