I have a couple of questions. First, how long do you have to make this
trip. Second, why do you want to rush to Chicago _then_ slow down?
You're missing what most people would consider to be the best part of
the trip if you do it that way.
But in answer to your question, the route through Las Vegas and Denver
will be the shortest. The southern route through Albuquerque and St.
Louis adds about 120 miles and arguably has more in the way of points of
interest--it also approximately parallels the old Route 66 which you
might want to google. Which will be faster depends on road conditions
at the time of the trip.
