No, the Airport Express is a bus. A big highway-type bus with a
luggage compartment.

Agreed.

There are two routes in the daytime: 192 Airport Rocket, regular-fare
semi-express to Kipling station; 58 Malton, regular service route to
Lawrence West station. Both are operated by ordinary city buses with no
luggage space. I'd rather spend more of the trip on a subway train than
a bus (more space, no road traffic delays), so I think 192 to Kipling
is the preferable one of the two services for most destinations.

You don't need a transfer to transfer to the subway. You may need it
if, when you get off the subway, you are transferring to another bus or
streetcar route. (This is something that depends on which station you
transfer at. Both Kipling and Lawrernce West stations have bus terminals
within the fare-paid zone, so you don't need a transfers to transfer.
Most downtown stations don't, so you do.)

That's a semi-express service. It runs to both Yorkdale and York
Mills subway stations, but at the airport it only serves Terminal 1.
The one-way fare is $4.05, but the subway is a separate fare.
As the above page notes, there may or may not be a luggage compartment.
When you have a more specific location than "downtown" in mind, we can
advise as to specific routes. For example, the 192 bus + subway option
is more convenient for locations near Bloor Street; the Airport Express
is more convenient for locations near Union Station.
