Unless it's deteriorated in the past 2 years, the road from Port-au-Basques
to St. Johns is very good. It's the Trans Canada Highway and we found it to
be comparable to or better than many US Interstates, condition-wise. Much
of it is 4-lane, and the speed limit is 100 KPH om most of it. The worst
roads we encountered were up on the islands around Twillingate.
It's a long haul up to NL, but worth every mile once you get there. But you
really do need to allow about 3 weeks minimum to see all the best parts. We
arrived at Port-au-Basques (5-6 hrs ferry from North Sydney, covered most of
the island and the southeastern portion of Labrador, and ultimately returned
via the Argentia ferry (about 15 hrs) to North Sydney, and we were there a
little more than 3 weeks during July '04.
