Keep following r.t.l-a, and look out for a guy there who goes by the name
Technobarbarian. He's been to all corners of Mexico (several times) and will
likely be able to give you tons of good advice. If he doesn't respond to
this thread, google the group for him and I'm sure you'll find his answers
to similar questions.

I won't bother commenting on Cancun - I'd only be echoing Sarah Banick and
Iceman.
The bus ride from Cancun to Mexico City lasts about 24 hours, IIRC. If
you're looking to split it over 7-9 days in order to see things along the
way, you'd be averaging about 3 hours/day on a bus. I wouldn't want to cover
that distance by bus in that little time unless there were some things that
I _really_ wanted to see along the way.
Flights in Mexico aren't too bad. The last time I was there (March 2007),
I'd planned to fly into and out of Mexico City and bus around from there,
but at the last minute I decided that I wanted some time on the beach so I
booked a one-way flight to Zihuatanejo and that cost $100 USD. The nice
thing was that one-way flights didn't cost exhuberant prices - they were
exactly 50% of the price of round-trip fares.

If you've your heart set on doing this by land, I wouldn't bother with a
tour. Intercity buses are actually better in Mexico than they are in the US
or Canada. Make sure you bring a sweater for the bus rides though because
the drivers really love their a/c - I've been on rides where they have the
bus in the range of 14 deg C.
Also, as luck would have it, there's a really comprehensive site that covers
all the buses (there's usually more than one company servicing each route)
in the part of Mexico that you're asking about:
