Hi Sarah.

The One-World Explorer ticket that I'll be using has limited
Mexican airports; thus I'll be arriving and departing via
Cancun (as nearest to Chichen Itza and other Mayan sites)
and Mexico City (Teotuhican etc). However, if I don't use a
tour I intend to stay somewhere like Valladolid, not Cancun,
and spend minimal time in Mexico City with maximum time at
the ancient sites. I won't be hiring a car this time.

Unfortunately that ticket includes no direct flight options
between the two, so I will have to transit via Miami, CLT or
DFW, which involves not just extra flights and time but the
hassle of unnecessarily re-entering the US as a foreigner. I
was considering a land tour between the two to avoid that
and also to see places like Palanque, Vera Cruz etc
en-route.

I realise some of those mass tours can be less than
wonderful - which is why I was looking for opinions:-)

Cheers, Alan, Australia
