If you appreciate truly great restaurants with staying power and principles,
rather than going to any trendy downtown restaurant, you should head to Chez
Panisse in Berkeley. It's an easy, 20-minute hop on the BART.
If I had to choose one restaurant in the US to eat at for ever and ever, it
would be Chez Panisse. Not only that, but it's an incredible value.
If you absolutely insist on downtown, then go to Gary Danko. It is terrific and
memorable.
(Yes, we've been to the Laundry, Danko, Fleur de Lis, La Folie, Bouchon, etc.,
etc.)
