No I'm a gardener. Dumping ice on some plants will indeed cause them to
go in shock. Some plants like some pelargermaniums are 80% water. If
you subject one that you've cultivated between 40F - 99F to ice it will
go into shock, especially if it has be acclimated to 80 - 99F. Sugar
will indeed draw ants and some species are omnivorous. Once the sugar
is consumed, they will turn to the nearest source of sugar - the plant.
If you want to help the environment, know what it is you are doing and
consider the impact. Otherwise you aren't any different then the people
who caused the problems in the first place.
