I've rented a few times, and in the US I generally get the "gas"
option. When I returned my car to Nashville, I would have just turned
on that fuel light taking it into the airport, but I got lost looking
for a speciality restaurant, so I stuck $2 in it to turn the light off
(just to make sure I didn't get lost again and actually run out. Auto
club or not, I don't like hassles when time matters).
In Salt Lake I didn't get my money's worth because I filled in Ely, I
had to, didn't know when the next station would appear and how much it
would cost (I went to Salt Lake via Baker, Delta, Provo). The agent
sold it to me as "one less thing for you to worry about on your
trip" (which works for me because by the second to last day, I'm out
of money... that's why I always drive all day, and take a night
departure so I can save hotel, and be so tired from driving that I
sleep on the way home). Not to mention with that $40 tank of gas, he
gave me a free upgrade to a full size from a compact car, and yes,
compacts were available. There were 12 cars for me to chose from, the
agent took me out to the lot and I had my choice of car and colour, so
in the end, I got something REALLY good. Not many one way rentals in
Utah.
Be ware of one way rentals throughout the South East USA (and likely
many other locations where there are lots of cities). You will likely
get plates that are not in state, and I find being in a big city can
be more nasty when you appear to be from out of state. I'd have
preferred both Nashville and Memphis with TN plates (I got Florida
plates, and somehow I don't think Florida drivers are that popular...
not to mention people kept asking me, "you from Florida?" on my whole
trip).
