Several years back I received a non-payment notice / collections notice
from the Newport, RI police for an unpaid parking ticket recorded against
my NY State registered car's license plate, with the date of the offense
listed on the notice. They used the license plate registration info to
correctly describe my car. One problem though. Not only was I not in
Newport ever *with that car* (only as a tag-along rider in company
functions, with other drivers), on the date in question I was in Dover, DE
watching the NASCAR races, and staying in a hotel in Newark, DE for that
weekend. I sent my response letter via certified mail-return receipt with a
copy of the dated hotel receipt and race ticket stubs. I got my return
receipt, but no further contact from Newport P.D. and nothing charged
against my NY license or registration at renewal. Sometimes you can be
totally innocent and also get charged with something that could wreck your
day. I'm glad I had supporting documentation that I was elsewhere at that
day in question.
