Also try the public library in that town. Talk to the librarian
working at their reference desk (sometimes called the information
desk). They should have copies of many local historical records --
census records, old local newspapers listing births and so forth
(probably on microfilm, but they can make prints), etc.

You could also check with the local historical society; they often
have all kinds of old records. (But if it's a small town, the
historical society may be run by part-time volunteers, so phone ahead
to make sure they're open.)
