Kevin, it is my understanding that in Calgary you will have to get your
luggage, then go through US customs at the Calgary airport. I don't
think the airlines can move your luggage to the next plane ( you can
double check with westjet) So, if you have needed foods/ drinks handy in
your suitcase that at least can take care of specific non-plane
allowable diabetes needs in between flights.
Foods for on the plane Canada leg::
any and all fruits, sandwiches, cheese, boiled eggs, crackers
For drinks:
there is diet soft drinks on the plane, tomato juice, coffee and tea (
take your own tea bag if you want and get hot water!; we do)
Officially, for the US leg, one is not allowed to bring any fruit
through customs into the US; the US departures ae considered US
territory. However, I have taken personal oranges, bananas etc.
Also, in Miami, being very nice and telling customs I have diabetes (
get a letter from your doctor; it can be very useful in case of delays!)
they let me take a small yoghurt on the plane.
Any and all sandwiches are allowed ( I take turkey breast on a bun), and
basically anything not liquid and not fruit is allowed.
If you have not flown yet with the diabetes dx, be prepared you might
react ( negatively) to the lowered oxygen level on the plane. I would
advice to totally stay away from alcohol.
As to food vendors, sorry I never use them but you can check out:

hope that helps. Have a great time in L. A.
Oh, be aware ( we were stunned) we found cab drivers in L.A. did not
take credit cards; cash only. We were cash broke from cab rides. Found 1
who could ( was willing??) to call it in. Not used to that in Calgary |
