I've been happy with Rodeway Inn as cheap decent places go. In my
rather less than exhaustive experience they have free high-speed
Internet, and they give frequent flyer points on an airline where I
accumulate them. (That's no small thing to consider -- hotels and
motels hereabouts usually give points by the stay rather than by the
night, so if you're in a different place every few nights for three
months, this could really add up to a nice bonus for you.) Some of
their motels are newish and look like typical chain motels; others are
"reflagged" smaller/older local properties.
I've also had good luck (and a couple of creepy experiences) over the
years staying at local independents. They seem much less likely to
partner up with frequent flyer programs or to offer amenities such as
Internet, though.
When the inexpensive places speak of "free breakfast" they usually
mean coffee and some donuts or bagels. However, motels and
inexpensive restaurants go together for obvious reasons, and grocery
stores tend to keep fairly late hours in a lot of American cities.
This is just one of several places where I stay when traveling on my
own dime -- as others have pointed out, the motel is a distinctly
American way to travel and very widely available. Just watch out for
major holidays, the near vicinity of major tourist attractions, or,
heaven help you, the major, major pain of both combined, unless you
have reservations.
Cheers,
--Joe
