However 'bird flu/SARS really *was* a dangerous
organism - one they *barely* contained in time.
The effect in China was severe - so severe it
essentially imposed martial law in afflicted
cities.

Um ... just because "they" stopped talking about it
really doesn't mean the vulnerability ceased to exist.
IF there are unsecured samples of smallpox virus, or
somebody can dig some up from mass graves, it really
COULD be used as a devastating weapon. Jihadists in
particular ... what do they care if it gets back to
the homefront either ? Marytrs for Allah ....
Of course 'natural' epidemics and deliberate
bioterrorism have a different 'feel' to them,
however the net EFFECT is pretty much the
same ... sick and dead people all over the
place. I wonder though ... if bin-Ladens
guys had brought H1N1 into Mexico, would
there have been a better federal response ?
