Veg all:
Call the airline or check at the gate of your first flight and ask about the
"load factor" on the earlier connection you want. This will tell you
whether there any seats available (could change later due to weather or
earlier cancellations). Also ask about the projected arrival gate of your
first flight and the departure gate of the connecting flight. Most airlines
